Singapore’s Quiet yet Strategic Advancement Towards Global ai Leadership
Singapore, the bustling city-state, has continued to make significant strides towards becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence (ai). Last month, Singapore announced its intentions to invest over $743 million (S$1 billion) into the development of ai technologies. This investment is part of a larger plan to establish Singapore as a leading hub for ai research and innovation.
The Launch of the Newly Established Singaporean ai Institute
This week, the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched its new ai institute, marking a crucial step towards synergizing and spearheading ai research and innovation across various sectors in the country. In a statement published on Monday, NUS stated that the new institute would focus on advancing ai technologies within different sectors of the economy, including education, healthcare, finance, and sustainability.
$20 Million in Funding for Singapore’s New ai Institute
According to the university, the new ai institute will bring together a diverse range of ai expertise from various schools within NUS. The institute will serve as a focal point to foster collaboration and create a dynamic ecosystem, with a particular focus on four research areas: foundational ai; policy & societal implications of ai; real–world applications across various domains; and ai Infrastructure.
“The impact of ai on our lives, society, and economy will depend on how we develop, deploy, and govern these technologies to maximize their benefits while addressing the challenges and risks,” said Professor Liu Bin, NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology).
To kickstart the institute’s initiatives, NUS plans to invest $14.8 million (S$20 million) in internal funding, in addition to securing $5.9 million (S$8 million) in external research grants that have already been granted to researchers.
Singapore’s ai Institute: A Global Node of Thought Leadership
“NAII aspires to become a global node of ai thought leadership,” said NUS Professor Mohan Kankanhalli. “Recognizing the importance of growing a pipeline of ai talent, the institute will also provide exciting hands-on opportunities for NUS students who are keen to pursue a career in ai or explore entrepreneurial pursuits in this fast-growing field,” added Professor Mohan Kankanhalli from the NUS School of Computing.
Preparing for the ai Era: Singapore’s Career Initiatives
To address ethical concerns related to ai and prepare its residents for the ai era, Singapore has taken various steps. Recognizing that ai’s potential to replace human workers has been a concern, the government launched a new subsidy scheme for people aged 40 and above. The aim is to enable these individuals to pursue full-time diploma courses in higher education, thereby repositioning them with improved skills needed to stay relevant and competitive in the future.
Partnering with Industry Leaders
IBM and Google Cloud have been announced as industry partners for the new ai institute. NUS is currently engaging with other local and international companies to explore collaborative initiatives.
