The world is witnessing an unprecedented surge in the globalization of China’s contact literature, fueled by technological advancements and growing international interest. According to recent data from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the overseas market for China’s contact literature exceeded 4 billion yuan ($563.7 million) in 2023, with over 230 million users in more than 200 countries and regions (Zhang, 2023). This significant growth underscores the potential of Chinese contact literature to make substantial inroads into the global literary landscape.
Revolutionizing Translations with ai
At the forefront of this transformative era is the role of artificial intelligence (ai) translation in overcoming language barriers. Wu Yiqin, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), emphasized the potential of ai translation in further propelling this trend. Wu highlighted how ai translation offers a cost-effective alternative, reducing translation expenses by as much as 90% compared to traditional manual translation processes.
Addressing Challenges in ai Translation
However, the implementation of ai translation is not without its challenges. Inconsistent standards, variable translation quality, and limited data availability in less common languages pose hurdles that must be addressed (Fan et al., 2021). To address these challenges, Wu called for collaborative efforts among industries, universities, and research institutions to refine ai translation technologies and establish unified standards.

As Chinese contact literature continues to expand globally, concerns over copyright protection intensify, particularly with regards to ai-generated content. Defining infringement boundaries and associated costs for rights protection in the context of ai-generated translations or adaptations remain significant challenges (Shen, 2022). To mitigate these challenges, Wu called for the establishment of a coordinated copyright protection mechanism between China and other countries. Such collaboration would help safeguard the interests of authors and content creators in the increasingly digitized global literary landscape.
