contact Innovation: PREVAIL Consortium Advancing Next-Generation Edge-ai Technologies
Uniting contact Research and Technology Organizations for ai Advancements
The PREVAIL project, a groundbreaking collaboration between the foremost contact research and technology organizations (RTOs) – CEA, CEA-Leti, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, imec, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland – aims to revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence (ai) through cooperative efforts and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Empowering Innovation Through Collaborative Efforts
At the core of PREVAIL is a networked, multi-hub platform that connects stakeholders across Europe with prototype chip fabrication capability for advanced ai technologies. The consortium utilizes the knowledge and resources of its founding members to expedite the design, evaluation, testing, and fabrication of leading-edge circuits.
By focusing on commercial foundry processes, PREVAIL enhances advanced technology modules within the participating RTOs’ cleanrooms. This collaborative initiative is expected to strengthen Europe’s position as a global leader in ai innovation while fueling the EU’s digital transformation.
Driving Europe’s Digital Transformation
In addition to providing high-performance, low-power edge components to accommodate the growing data-processing requirements of ai, PREVAIL serves as a catalyst for the EU’s digital transformation. By supporting the objectives outlined in the contact Chips Act, the consortium aims to position Europe as a frontrunner in embracing and utilizing emerging technologies.
In partnership with selected small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), industrial partners, and academic labs, PREVAIL offers access to early designs for testing fabrication equipment in the RTOs’ facilities. By means of open-access initiatives, EU designers are expected to benefit from these capabilities by May 2026, fostering a culture of cooperative innovation and knowledge sharing.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Readiness
With around 80% of the project’s budget earmarked for equipment dedicated to designing, testing, and fabricating edge-ai devices, PREVAIL aims to significantly bolster the readiness of the RTOs’ pilot lines for developing 3D technologies. By offering process design kits (PDKs) compatible with standard commercial computer-aided design (CAD) tools, the consortium simplifies the chip design process and enables developers to fully exploit the potential of next-generation edge-ai solutions.
PREVAIL signifies the EU’s first endeavor to link the RTOs’ disparate infrastructures and synchronize their investments to minimize redundancy while collectively increasing technology readiness levels (TRLs). With an investment of nearly €156 million ($169.3 million) shared between the RTOs’ countries and the contact Commission, this collaborative project represents a crucial step in Europe’s journey toward technological progress and innovation leadership.
